When I was nine, I wished for a guitar.

I was told I would have to wait till Christmas, which was four months away. Four months seems like an eternity for a nine year old.

Finally the day arrived and I was led into the sun-room to receive my present. Alas instead of a guitar my parents had bought me a piano. My mother told me if I practiced hard for the next few years and became proficient enough to get accepted into the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, then I could choose the guitar as my second instrument.

Well to cut a very long story short I got accepted to the  conservatorium but my mother reneged on the promise and announced that I would have to take up the violin as my second instrument.

I rebelled and closed the lid to my piano playing, [ a great pity, the piano is a great instrument ]. I left home and bought a guitar with my first paycheck at age thirteen.

I joined a band [The Sons of Agamemnon] as a blues harp player and emulated everything I could copy from their lead guitarist and every other guitarist who had the patience to show me their favorite riffs.

Like every other kid in the 60's, I studied chord charts, bought  guitar tablature music, listened to all the guitar heroes and copied Leonard Cohen's Sisters of Mercy record note for note by ear.

After 25 years of playing professionally and now the lead guitarist and singer for DeJaVue I came to a crisis with my guitar playing. Musically I had outgrown my playing technique. By that I mean I could hear music in my head but could not play it on the guitar. I got so frustrated, I felt like throwing the guitar against the wall. Realizing I was lacking in technique I decided to start again at the basics and began a beginners course in classical guitar. It was very difficult  for me at the beginning as I had to undo some bad habits developed over the past 25 years. Also I wasn't aspiring to be a classical guitar player - I was more into jazz fusion, rock, blues and Spanish Guitar.

I find it difficult now to put into words how grateful I am that  I persevered with that course. It opened all my options, got rid of the barrier;  that was holding me back from releasing my musical creativeness because of my self- limiting guitar technique.

The more I learn about the guitar, the more I realize how much more there is to learn, but finally I have come to the stage where I feel in harmony with this wonderful instrument.

I decided to create this Guitar Tutor to enable a complete beginner to start of on the right foot before falling into bad habits and developing self-limiting bad techniques.

Also to enable the pro who like myself has come to a point of frustration due to years of accumulative bad habits - to retrain in a technique that will put them on the road to eventually enable them to play any style of guitar they choose with ease.

How To Play Guitar - Interactive Guitar Tutor; is a very basic tutor but as expressed above it is getting the basics correct that's so vital to becoming a proficient guitarist.

As an example here is something  to help me get the point across.

Before learning the techniques given in this Guitar Tutor I could comfortably reach the notes on the first three frets.

After learning the techniques given in this tutor, I could comfortably reach the notes on the first five frets, that's equivalent to 12 extra notes!

Before learning the techniques given in this tutor I was playing riffs at good speed [remember I was already playing the guitar professionally for 25 years].

After practicing the techniques given in this tutor for a couple of months I literally started to shred in any position on the guitar. [shred - means playing at blitzing speed].

This Guitar Tutor does not use chord charts or tablature, nor does it have a compilation of songs for you to learn -  there are literally thousands of good guitar song books on the market that serve that purpose already.

This Guitar Tutor teaches you the techniques via diagrams, photographs, video, play along sound files, written instructions and music notation. It also includes an interactive guitar tuner.

To enable you to hear the sound files and Guitar Tuner you need to have quicktime or windows media player installed on your computer - these programs are free to download and if not already enabled on your  computer please follow the prompts to download them when you log in to the Online Guitar Tutor for the first time.
