Hey Kitty. Hope this finds you well. I thought I would say hello, thank you for your kind invite and earn my keep with a bit of contributing:)

In answer to your question, Aweber, hands down. For your members, anyone who is starting list building, I have put my post in below from howto, if thats ok and I have a series of 15 free videos, no pot in, just a free set on how to set up all the mechanical bits for a list, so if anyone wants that pm me.

My post below:

I will share something I have recently tried out. I have a large list of subscribers, about 50k plus at this stage but I am an utter fanatic for tweaking my squeeze pages to increase my lists still further.. Basically I give away my most ninja tip, I mean the really money stuff in a two paragrapgh or a min video on the page, then I move them along to a second page, in this one I elaborate on it and move them onto the next page which is a seamless seuge into the aff offer, by that I mean as much as possible same text look, same page layout, same graphics etc. Now, this is somewhat of a departure because for a long time, I have a list of nearly 50k subscribers, I used to get my prospects into a seven - fourteen day e course but after a long conversation with another IMer, they made the very reasonable point, that on landing on my page that is when the prospect is most engaged and ready to buy. Think of it from their point of view, day 1 - "I like the stuff this gal sends out....Day 3 - "I must get around to that".....Day 6 - "I wish they would stop sending me stuff really" and they are very far from buying. Now, this may fly in the face of a lot of what we normally do, long term relationship building but I have noticed my opt-ins and conversions have gone up on this - Two caveats - You must bowl them over with the first thing you tell them on the page, I mean that has to be a nugget of IM gold  that they would have paid for - Secondly - The aff offer does not even have to be that closely related to the tip or area, so long as you move them through the two pages and onto the offer page. From what I have seen thus far, they are hot to buy on it. Granted this is not conventional, sell first etc but it works and I get them on my list and I treat my list like gold, so good sale and an email maybe once a month after if I see something that is of use to them. If you are just starting out building again, ad-swaps, low repsonse rate though or where I started, WSOs for free to build. Anyway, thats just something I am trying out if anyone wants to give it a shot too

Hi Linda and welcome aboard!
Thank you for your useful post.
I agree with your concept here.
If you go to my sites you will note that I do not have any capture pages that bribe people for their contact information in exchange for the information they are seeking on my sites.
Instead - once they have read my information I invite them to add their details to receive updates and news from me.
These invites are scattered within my sites and are part of my contact pages as well.
I have around 70,000 loyal subscribers and am very careful not to abuse their confidentiality and trust.
I keep my messages to a minimum and only send them messages on the topics they subscribed to hear about.

Cheers,
Kitty.

Hi Kitty:) How are you? I like your forum, feels like a cafe almost. I have a hard won tip in the sprirt of quid pro quo here. I have found that my opt ins increase substantially when I don't ask for a first name, in other words just the email address. I surmise that people don't like giving out there first names, perhaps its too personal in this medium, however they will give out their emails. A strange one, to be sure but I have split tested this and its true, opt-ins increase. Must put this one up on the the howtocorp too actually but there you go.

Hi Linda,

Thank you for sharing the results of your split testing using first names -v - no first names.
Posting results like these can save others a lot of time and work.

I just wonder whether this might be a false positive for the life of your list.
From my experience it is not the size of the list that counts - rather the relationship you develop with the people in the list.
For instance have you noticed/tested whether the people you address with their first names are more responsive to your future messages to them - than people who you do not address personally?

Cheers,

Kitty.

Hi Kitty,

That is an excellent question and one I am monitoring closely, will someone not giving their first name show less commitment to the buying process and not produce a sale? From my initial findings, I think there is no drop off with email only opt ins, now this could be because I treat my list very well, no ad swaps, no rubbish, quality low cost offerings that work etc etc so that may be a variable too. I am testing this over the next six weeks and will see what results I can quantify at that point. Its verging on the scientific :)

Hi Linda,
You wrote: "will someone not giving their first name show less commitment to the buying process and not produce a sale?"
I don't think it is so much the lack of commitment as the impersonal address of "Hi," in future correspondence.

For instance if I receive a message that does not address me by name, I assume the person writing to me does not know me.
I am more inclined to seriously read a message from someone who addresses me personally with my first name than a message that just says "Hi,".

If I get an email from "PayPal" that does not address me by my personal name I delete it instantly because I know it is a Phising [fraud] email.
I guess we have come to suspect any emails that don't address us personally.

I realize the less people have to fill out when signing up to an opt-in, the better - just think the effectiveness of a personal address in future correspondence outweighs the loss of people not signing up in the first place.

I think people don't hesitate about giving their first name and email address. Just don't ask them for Surnames, phone #'s, addresses etc.

I could be wrong as I have not tested it - but I want to know the name of the person behind the email address so that I can address them personally in future correspondence.

Cheers,

Kitty.

Hey Kitty.

That would be my experience too, being addressed by name would have a bearing on whether or not I would read on any further in some cases, however this, even from the ctr's I am looking at from today, seem to bear out. I am going to change the offer though too as a variable on another LP and see there. Its the smaller factors that interest me and I may be chasing nothing of substance here but I will keep looking ai it. Keep you posted

Hi Allistair148,
The only FREE autoresponder I am aware of without advertising ans unlimited use that I know of is one you create and host yourself.
See: http://www.myscribeweb.com/Forum/index.php/topic,17.msg137.html#msg137

Just be aware that if you install your own script on your own hosting you need to white list the application with all the major ISP's otherwise you will not get any decent delivery rate.

Cheers,
Kitty.
