Just in case anyone here is having problems with networking windows 7.
I just took delivery of a new computer with windows 7 home premium installed [cable] and networked it with another desktop computer with Vista [cable] and a laptop with XP pro [wireless].
All the computers are connected via a gateway and a wireless 64bit encrypted switch.
Windows 7 has a neat way of creating a "homegroup" network - but only if all your computers are running windows 7.
To create a home network using computers with different Operating systems installed the first step is to set all your computers to the same workgroup name.
I also created the same user name and password on all the computers and the trendmicro internet security system that I am using.
At this stage I could see all the computers and their protection through the Trend Micro Network Map.
However I could only see and connect to the computer running Vista, via the network map on windows 7.
At this stage I went to the microsoft help forum [plenty of folks having problems networking win7 to computers with different OS.At this stage no sensible solutions found there.]
I found out that to see my laptop running windows Xp on the win 7 network map needed an install of Link-Layer Topology Discovery Responder.
This is an easy install if you are running win XP SP2 - but not if you are running win XP SP3, as I am.
To cut a long story short when unpacking the exe file via CMD you are warned that your computer will be reverted back to SP2 during the install.
Not wanting that to happen I aborted the install, actually all that this instal does is enable you to see the computer on the
win7 network map - it has nothing to do with connectivity or file sharing.
My solution was changing the network address within the network adaptor on my win7 computer to the switch's ISP address.
Created a new password protected driveletter for my shared folders that I access through "Work Network" not "homegroup" on win 7
Everything is working great.
Of course my laptop still does not apear on the "Network Map" in win 7 as I aborted the install of the LLTD but I can live with that.
Hope this helps anyone who is having the same problems that I had with this function.
Cheers,
Kitty.
